WHAT A DIFFERENCE SIX MONTHS MAKES

I have had the pleasure of photographing Brayden twice this year. It had been about 6 months since I had seen Brayden, and I can't even explain how much healthier and happier he looked. It brought tears to my eyes to see this little boy so excited and smiling so big I could see all of his teeth. He's one of my favorite kiddos to see at Family House, and is always asking me who I'm photographing today or if I take his picture that I should show his mom because she would love it. I'm so thrilled to share some of Brayden's journey with you to start off the New Year!

Brayden was diagnosed with SCID, severe combined immunodeficiency, which means he was born without an immune system. No T cells and B cells, only his NK cells. Brayden was two months old when he was diagnosed, and at the age of three months old he had his first bone marrow transplant. I was his half match donor. He is seven years old today.

Brayden was too little to understand what was going on. For me, and my family, it was very hard because we didn’t know anything about this illness, or why it was happening, it’s very rare. Brayden has always needed treatment after his bone marrow transplant. So this is natural to him, he has been used to this all. He doesn’t know a life outside of this, unfortunately...

Brayden is doing amazing now, he’s growing his hair back, he’s doing school, and each and every day he’s getting better and better. Brayden’s needed three transplant in his lifetime, and there were a lot of days that we weren’t sure if he was going to make it, but he’s a fighter and never gave or gives up and that’s truly amazing! He overcomes it all and just lives day by day!

Any advice I’d give is that... just have faith in the man upstairs, never lose hope no matter how hard it gets, there’s a reason for everything, whether we understand it or not. And that your child is stronger than you think and will pull through it all. Take (it) day by day, and never lose faith. :)
