Seojin's birthday party wasn't the first one I had photographed, but it was one of the first ones where a parent had emailed me to see if I photograph birthdays. I was so honored because this was a huge deal. I still hadn't registered my business and was thinking how would I even go about being a family/nonprofit photographer in San Francisco? You basically walk outside and you'll run into 3 photographers. Can I do this? This birthday party gave me an extra boost, especially since it was coming from San Jose so I felt like a really big deal.
I can't even tell you how nervous I was! I had mainly been photographing families that I already knew or friends of friends so I knew what I was getting into. This time I had never met anyone. I still hadn't put together the questionnaire that I send out now and at the time I didn't think to ask too many questions. All that to say, it was such a wonderful day and these kids were so sweet! Seojin and his parents were so kind and excited to have me there. It was such a special day for me and shortly thereafter I registered my business. It's so crazy to think about where I was a year ago. Right now I'm approaching my one year business anniversary (next week!), and I've already started to book into next year. I'm so thankful that this birthday party really pushed me out of my comfort zone and I haven't been in a comfortable place since, which is good a thing!
